At least 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's key public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” declared the country's president.

The leader announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its role in public projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also sparked ongoing questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in total compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and management of these vital initiatives.
